CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cleveland’s Puerto Rican story is getting a place to bloom.

A new Puerto Rican Cultural Garden is planned for Cleveland’s East Side near East 88th Street, across from the Rockefeller Greenhouse and Sam Miller Park. The project is set to join Cleveland’s celebrated Cultural Gardens as a lasting celebration of Puerto Rican history, identity, creativity and community.
For Cleveland’s Puerto Rican community, this is more than a new landmark. It is a long-awaited space to honor the people, families and traditions that have helped shape this city for generations.
Honoring Cleveland’s Puerto Rican roots
Puerto Rican families have deep roots in Cleveland. Beginning in the 1940s, many Puerto Ricans came to Northeast Ohio for work in steel, manufacturing, farming and greenhouse operations. Families built lives throughout the city, with early community ties especially strong in the Hough neighborhood.

Institutions including St. Agnes Our Lady of Fatima became important anchors for a growing community, offering faith, support and Spanish-language services to generations of Cleveland families.
A space for culture, connection and the next generation
Organizers with the Cleveland Puerto Rican Heritage Coalition envision the garden as a place where history can be shared, culture can be celebrated and future generations can see themselves represented with pride. The site is expected to include cultural and historical elements, along with room for gatherings, education, art and community events.

The garden will give young Boricuas a place to learn about their roots, give families a place to gather, and invite all Clevelanders to experience the richness of Puerto Rican culture.
Cleveland is stronger because of its many cultures, neighborhoods and voices. The Puerto Rican Cultural Garden will stand as a beautiful reminder that Puerto Rican history is Cleveland history.
